Drone operations in Australia are regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The legislation governing drone use changed in July 2019. Below is directly from the CASA website:

• The rules will require all drone flyers to gain an accreditation… or hold a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL)
• The registration and accreditation requirements apply to:
  • drones more than 250 grams operated recreationally, or
  • all drones operated commercially regardless of weight.

The Sunshine Coast region has two airports, at Caloundra and Maroochydore, and forms part of a busy flight corridor for private, commercial, military, sightseeing and rescue aircraft. Additionally, the expansion of the Maroochydore airport is bringing changes to flight paths and operational ceilings.

You may have noticed that drones are now restricted at places like Pt Cartwright as well. However, it is possible to still operate in these sensitive areas for experienced pilots that are correctly licenced.

On The Day Films is one of the few fully licenced and compliant drone companies in this region. All of our operators hold their Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and fly under our Chief Pilot who holds his Remote Operators Certificate (ReOC). A ReOC is analogous to a private pilots licence as it requires hours of written and practical exams and to be registered with CASA. 

When operating in these sensitive zones we are in direct radio communication with the control towers and aircraft in the area, providing assurance and peace of mind to our operations.

As a company, we are also licensed to oversee other commercial drone operations (RePL) meaning we can always be in the air, at almost any location around Australia.
